The story of the Mutisya Education Foundation (MEF) begins with Mr. Ancent Mutisya, a devoted educator whose compassion and commitment shaped generations of students in rural Machakos, Kenya.
For more than three decades, Mr. Mutisya walked long distances to reach remote schools, often teaching with limited resources while giving everything he could to ensure that every child had an opportunity to learn. He also worked courageously to challenge harmful cultural practices that prevented vulnerable children—especially girls—from accessing education.
His influence extended far beyond the classroom. Because of his unwavering belief in the power of education, students such as his son, Stephen Mutisya, and former student Fedelis Mutiso (current MEF board member) were able to pursue opportunities far beyond their rural communities. Both, later traveled to the United States as student-athletes and continued their higher education. Their journeys demonstrate what can happen when a child’s potential is recognized, encouraged, and supported.

Returning to Where the Journey Began
Beginning in 2015, Stephen Mutisya (CEO/President), returned to his former school and neighboring primary schools in rural Machakos. Standing before students who reminded him of his younger self, he spoke not simply as a visitor, but as someone who had once sat in their classrooms, walked the same paths, and experienced similar barriers to education.
Stephen openly shared his story, the hardships, setbacks, perseverance, and hope that carried him forward. His visits encouraged students to believe in themselves, work toward their goals, and imagine futures that once seemed beyond their reach.
However, Stephen also witnessed a painful reality. Many intelligent and hardworking children were struggling or leaving school, not because they lacked ability or determination, but because they lacked basic educational resources and meaningful support. Too many promising futures were being limited by circumstances beyond a child’s control.
He knew more had to be done.

Who We Are Today
The Mutisya Education Foundation is dedicated to empowering underprivileged and marginalized students in rural Machakos through education, mentorship, sports, and school development.
Our work is guided by the belief that a child’s circumstances should never determine the limits of their future. By strengthening both students and the schools that serve them, we aim to create environments where children are safe, supported, inspired, and equipped to reach their full potential.
A small group of dedicated private donors currently covers the foundation’s operating expenses, allowing public contributions to go directly toward the students, schools, programs, and projects we serve.
The Beginning of MEF
In 2020, the Mutisya Education Foundation was established in memory of Mr. Ancent Mutisya and in honor of the values that guided his life: education, compassion, service, and opportunity.
MEF began with a small academic awards program supported entirely by family and friends. The program recognized student achievement, encouraged academic effort, and reminded children that their hard work and potential mattered.
As the foundation developed, its work expanded to include additional student initiatives and partnerships with more rural schools. With each new partnership, MEF gained a deeper understanding of the challenges facing students, from inadequate learning materials and limited access to technology to underdeveloped sports programs and essential infrastructure needs.
To respond to these growing needs and welcome broader public support, MEF became a registered nonprofit organization in the United States in 2025.

Our Vision for the Future
As MEF continues to grow, our vision is to strengthen the programs already established while expanding our focus on sustainable school infrastructure and access to technology.
We hope to develop our digital literacy program by establishing computer labs and bringing internet access to partner schools. We also aim to improve learning environments, strengthen athletic opportunities, and provide the resources students need to participate fully in their education. As our capacity grows, we hope to expand our programs to include student sponsorships for students who need them most, helping remove financial barriers that may prevent them from continuing their education.
Through thoughtful growth, community involvement, and lasting partnerships, we are working to create a future in which every child, regardless of income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
PARTNER SCHOOLS
Currently, Mutisya Foundation is partnering with 5 schools located in Machakos, Kenya. We plan to extend this partnership to other nearby schools in dire needs in the future.
